Retaining Wall Repair and Reinforcement Project in Orinda, CA
Location: Orinda, CA
Problems: Existing concrete retaining wall required structural reinforcement and stabilization
Services: Retaining wall repair, retaining wall reinforcement, reinforced concrete piers and structural construction
Solution: Raised an existing concrete retaining wall, reinforced it with four new pier columns, and completed the work in accordance with engineered plans and a building permit.
The Problem: Strengthening an Existing Retaining Wall
Retaining walls play an important role on many Orinda properties, particularly those built on sloping terrain. Over time, some retaining walls require structural improvements to continue supporting the surrounding soil and landscape.
For this Orinda home, Ward Construction was hired to reinforce an existing concrete retaining wall using plans prepared by a structural engineer. Rather than removing and rebuilding the entire wall, the project focused on strengthening the existing structure while bringing it to the desired height near the garage.
The Solution: Raising and Reinforcing the Existing Wall
Following the engineer’s design, Ward Construction doweled into the existing concrete retaining wall and raised approximately 11 feet of the wall to match the height of the adjacent section closest to the garage.
By tying the new concrete into the existing wall, the project created a continuous structural connection while extending the wall to the required elevation. This approach allowed the homeowner to improve the existing retaining wall without replacing the entire structure.
Reinforced Pier Columns for Structural Support
A key component of the repair involved constructing four reinforced concrete pier columns, each approximately 24 inches in diameter, to provide additional structural support for the retaining wall.
These reinforced piers help transfer loads into the ground and increase the wall’s ability to resist the pressures exerted by the retained soil. Adding structural support beneath and behind a retaining wall is often an effective solution when strengthening an existing wall designed by a structural engineer.
Engineering and Permit Coordination
Structural retaining wall projects frequently require engineering and local building permits.
For this project, Ward Construction completed the work according to engineered plans prepared by Robert Rogers and obtained the required building permit before construction began. Working from engineered plans helps ensure that structural improvements are designed specifically for the conditions of the property and meet applicable building requirements.
Repairing Instead of Replacing
Not every retaining wall requires complete replacement. In some situations, an existing wall can be strengthened through carefully engineered structural improvements.
This Orinda project demonstrates how retaining wall reinforcement can provide a practical alternative when the existing structure can be incorporated into the final design. By combining new reinforced concrete with substantial pier support, the project extended and strengthened the retaining wall while preserving much of the original construction.
